Rinzai zen meditation

IMG_1341

today’s session was held by Rev Dr Masaki Matsubara at the San Francisco Zen Center

The most important take aways from today’s session are firstly, every moment and every activity can be considered meditation. Eating, sleeping, walking, talking and looking are all considered meditation

Secondly, the most important inner activity we can do is to set the cup down. This allows the inner contents to settle so that we can see clearly what they are as well as new things which we have never before noticed

On making progress

It occurred to me this priorly held belief that to make fast progress, we should make haste.

just for a change, I have decided to give up on the fallacious notion of meeting a deadline and instead focus fully on giving full attention to each and every minute detail.

I am curious what trouble it will land me up in which I will need to negotiate my way out of

Giving up on the hair

after coming to the conclusion, the hair with the current state it has grew into has became unmanageable and the weight too much strain on the follicles themselves, i went ahead and had it chopped off

the person that walked into the salon and the person that walked out is fundamentally the same except maybe USD150 poorer.

The hairdresser and the staff just kept on using the term a new person instead of a modified hair style. I consciously corrected them as they made the errorneous statement

Golden Gate Bridge and beyond

IMG_1257 IMG_1260 IMG_1293IMG_1238

Ilya and I were lucky enough to receive and invitation by Caroline to go sailing with her husband Nicola and his friends Oscar and Frank today on their 40 boat

we left Alameda and motored towards the Golden Gate bridge. The morning fog lifted from around as sun rose above head

the Boat had auto pilot and a really cozy cabin with 3 rooms and a head

the swells were 12 feet high past the golden gate.

realized the importance of turning the stern of the boat towards the incoming swell to ensure it does not get tipped sideways

on the way in, we brought out the Jenniaker, an asymmetrical Spinnaker. It could be past off as a geonna and a spinnaker.

Jibing was very challenging, with 70% of the time messing up the Jenniker

learned the importance of having a single captain on the boat to prevent conflicting orders

Learned the importance of not going up wind with a spinnaker or a jenniker

When sailing past bridges it was important to always cross pillars upwind with lots to avoid accidental jibing as would otherwise if sailing close downwind of pillar

heading into golden gate, currents are strong. Most sail boats were stuck outside waiting for current to flood.

Current was weird on Sausalito side of channel on the inside of the bridge, with whirlpools and constantly changing wind direction. San Francisco side of channel was better. Conditions were normal on the outside of the Golden Gate Bridge and became awkward on the inside of the Golden Gate Bridge

in Europe, leisure boat always gave way to workinb boats.

Angry people

today I had the opportunity to observe my body’s physiological response when being on the receiving end of extremely angry screams and cries from an angry person.

the ear was ringing and the chest got tense while I was observing it all. Liberation came when I realize these were just bodily sensations. I as a living being could choose with total freedom my response.

suddenly I recollect some childhood experience and gain insight into my aversion towards causing anger in people during my interactions and thus bending backwards.

Whenever playmates go into bout of tears and I happened to be within the same immediate convict of the situations one of the adults would come along and give us all a beating. The whopping would come first before the adults attempt at clarification.

this association between anger, crying and experienced physical pain was left as a sub imprint in the mind that was never fully addressed until today.

Now that this association has been clearly surfaced, I could conclude the adults back then were operating out of ignorance and should be forgiven, it is perfectly safe to be in a situation interacting with a angry screaming person, it is perfectly ok to simply observe his/her pain and anger

Active listening

lately through practice of meditation and active listening, conversations have became less effortful and more conducive.

I realize the lack of need to strive, the absence of strain and tension during collaborations.

It becomes easier to find opportunities to show appreciation for people you work with. It becomes easier to allow others the opportunity to contribute their efforts towards endeavors you find important.

Reflections for the evening

Feelings of boredom on closer inspection was actually back and neck muscle aches in disguise.

When in noisy parties avoiding any form of serious conversation helps improve overall level of joy

walking around in crowded places is not enjoyable. Half the time is spent avoiding body collision.

Less thinking and more sensing is also really good. Sense the rhythm of the music. Sense where the body wants to move. Nothing to gain, nothing to lose just enjoy the flow. Forget the self.
